Shipments of personal computer notebooks are coming in about in line with expectations, with July units tracking down 17% month-on-month with tightness in supplies proving to be a headwind, BMO Capital Markets said in a note.
Last month about 9.7 million units were shipped, BMO analysts Ambrish Srivastava and Tim Long said. Shortages in Intel (INTC) central processing units is continuing, and while Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) could gain share from the gaps, "our checks suggest that, it will take some time for AMD to meet the upside due to several factors, including delivery lead time and customer validation and testing," they wrote.
BMO said third-quarter total notebook original design manufacturer shipments will be "below seasonality" because of the supply tightness and after a "fairly strong" second quarter. Their view is for third quarter ODM shipments to be up 3% to 7% quarter-on-quarter.

The analysts are maintaining their outperform rating on Intel, and have market perform views on AMD, HP (HPQ), Western Digital (WDC), Seagate Technology (STX), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL) and NVIDIA (NVDA).

For motherboards, BMO said their industry checks show July shipments tracking at roughly 3.3 million units, down 8% on a monthly basis and flat year on year. That's also in line with their expectations.

"Checks suggest that motherboard shipments are expected to remain soft given lackluster cryptocurrency mining demand for graphics cards," Srivastava and Long wrote in the note. Near-term demand for graphics processing units "is more driven by regular gaming market or retail channel, as the cryptocurrency mining demand has weakened considerably."
