Summary
AMD remains our top semiconductor pick for 2017 despite reports suggesting RX 570 and 580 price/performance disadvantages at the mid-end.
We believe AMD can readjust pricing lower and sustain net profit margin expansion this year due to cost efficiency, and diminished dependence on pricing.
Furthermore, seasonality contributes to our Q2’17 thesis, but it doesn’t offer as much predictive value given product release slate.
Also, short interest is much higher and days to cover trending lower. Hence an impending short cover rally takes the stock much higher on a market pricing event.
In this case, we expect measurable momentum, but caution investors to avoid chasing the stock price beyond $20 ahead of the summer months.
